When the body produces insulin, various by-products are formed, one of which is C-peptide. The reason why C-peptide is measured instead of insulin is because C-peptide remains in the blood for a longer period compared to insulin. It is recommended to fast a few hours before the test is being performed.

Why should C-peptide be measured?

If it is suspected that the body’s production of insulin is unbalanced, an analysis of C-peptide can give a picture of what the body’s insulin production looks like. Different types of diabetes can affect the C-peptide value in the blood in different ways. By analyzing C-peptide, you can see what type of diabetes it is. However, the assessment needs to be supplemented with other information than just a blood test. Analysis of C-peptide is also carried out during ongoing insulin treatments.

Increased value of C-peptide

If the test shows an elevated value of C-peptide, it is an indication that it is about type 2 diabetes, especially if the blood sugar value is also elevated. Often, an analysis for C-peptide is taken together with other blood tests, e.g. HbA1c (sold separately, A1C Now+).

Low value of C-peptide

It is not good to have either an elevated or a too low value of C-peptide because it shows that the body’s production of insulin is out of balance. A low value of C-peptide means that the body’s insulin production is inhibited or out of order, something that can quickly lead to problems. When the body cannot produce enough of its own insulin, one has type 1 diabetes.

How to perform tests

The test is performed by capillary sampling, where the blood is mixed with a buffer solution, which is then dripped directly onto the test. When the analysis is complete, the test cassette is inserted into the Insudex reader, which is purchased separately. The device reads the measured value in real-time, and a result is reported on the display or a mobile device.
